How to prevent fatal falls
Recent newspaper reports of young children falling to their deaths prompted Mr Ang Thow Kok, 38, Managing Director of the Silver River Group, to step in with the ideal preventive measure: free fitted grilles on any window a child could fall out of.

W
ith the thought that "Prevention is better than Cure", Mr Ang pledged that his company, which has been in aluminium construction for 18 years, would donate and install 100 window grilles in the homes of needy families.

From the newspaper he noticed that most toddlers fell to their death from bedroom windows-so that's where his company installed the grilles immediately after his offer was publicized by the Shin Min Daily.

Improved Offer

After the first few installations, however, he expanded his offer. His team realized grilles were needed throughout the home, wherever a toddler could climb out and fall more that a metre or two.

So now Mr Ang's offer is for window grilles wherever they are needed in 100 homes.

"Although we are only reaching out to 100 households now, we hope that through our efforts, others will follow suit to help these families" said Mr Goh Chwee Cheng, 37, Manager at the Silver River Group.

"It's a baby step, but it is a step towards a better society."

If you know a family with a gross monthly household income of less that $1,500, with at least one child below the age of 10 years, who needs window grilles to prevent accidents, you should suggest that they call the CDC Hotline: 470 2818.
