What took place

At the Singapore 21 @ Work conference, Mr David Lim, Minister of State for Defence and Information and the Arts and Chairman of the Singapore 21 Facilitation Committee (S21 FC) spoke to about 270 participants about the challenges that lay ahead for the FC.

These included bringing about awareness of and active support for S21, as well as sustaining the public's interest in S21 (read keynote address).

Singapore 21 Survey

Also revealed in the keynote address were key findings of a recent survey commissioned by the FC. The survey revealed that one in three persons could recall S21 without prompting, and most associated S21 with building a better society for the future. However, a clear majority still expected the government to take the lead. A significant minority was also found to be sceptical about S21, but Mr Lim said that this was not unexpected:

"If this scepticism is about means rather than ends, about the way we are trying to achieve our goals, rather than the ideals of the Singapore 21 vision itself, it can play a useful role. Critical feedback provides a reality check, so that our own rhetoric doesn't carry us away."

Details of the survey can be found here.

Presentations

Representatives from the people, private and public sectors shared initiatives and best practices that supported the S21 key ideas. There were five presentations and two skits in all.

Question-and-Answer Session

The conference wrapped up with a Question-and-Answer Session with a panel of five S21 FC members chaired by Mr Lim. Issues brought up included the treatment of maids and the role of education in developing a sense of belonging in children.

Feedback

Feedback from the participants was positive. Many said that they now understood the S21 vision better, while others said they realised that they/their organisation had a part to play in realising the vision. The skits, which were very well received, were described as an innovative and effective way of conveying the S21 messages.
