What took place

The Institute of Policy Studies organised a forum on civil society at the NUS Guild House on 8 May. The five speakers - James Gomez (Director, Think Centre), Leon Perera (The Working Committee), Alvin Tan (The Necessary Stage), Dr Kwok Kian Woon (Heritage Society) and Dr Gillian Koh (IPS) - spoke on the state of civil society in Singapore from his/ her personal perspective. Among the issues raised were the need for greater pan-civil society collaboration, the nexus between civil and political society, and the use of the Internet as a tool of communication amongst civil society groups as well as between these groups and the public. The forum also discussed how more avenues could be provided for foreigners to air their views and participate in community work. The turnout of about 100 included Mr Tay Kheng Soon, Dr Chua Beng Huat, Ms Dana Lam from AWARE and many other civil society activists.
